District plans often begin with roads and development parcels. Human scale asks a different first question: what does a person see, hear and reach during a short walk?
Break down distance
Mark destinations that can be reached comfortably on foot and identify the gaps between them. A fine-grained network of routes and entrances can make a large district feel navigable.
Layer the experience
Combine clear landmarks with small details at eye level: shade, planting, seating and active windows. The two scales work together, giving both orientation and reasons to linger.
Review the section
Plan views alone can hide uncomfortable proportions. Draw street sections with people, trees and doors at realistic sizes to test whether the public realm feels generous or exposed.
