The meeting between a new building and an established street is a design task in its own right. Height and facade style matter, but the first few metres at ground level often matter more to daily life.
Read the street section
Measure pavement width, setbacks, shade and the position of entrances. Draw the view from across the street and from the walking route. These simple studies reveal where a building should align and where it can depart.
Give the ground floor a role
A clear threshold, useful frontage and comfortable edge can make a large project feel approachable. Blank walls and hidden doors tend to weaken the public realm even when the upper floors are carefully composed.
Design for change
Allow ground-floor spaces to adapt over time. A flexible structure can support new uses without forcing the street to start over every time the programme changes.
