A screen may express privacy and shade at the same time. A courtyard may organise family life and airflow. Understanding these roles makes it possible to adapt them to a new programme without producing a replica.
Use a measured vocabulary
Choose a few relationships to carry forward: the scale of openings, the rhythm of solid and void or the sequence from public to private. Let contemporary construction methods remain legible.
Invite local review
Discuss early ideas with people who know the place. Their feedback can reveal whether a design feels respectful, useful and familiar in ways that a reference board cannot.
